1. What is the Self Verification feature?

Self Verification is a feature offered by Koo in accordance with Rule 4(7) of the Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code Rules, 2021 allowing users to voluntarily verify their account as authentic. 

It is an opportunity for users to demonstrate that there is an authentic user behind a Koo profile. 

Self Verified users are easily distinguishable from unverified users, a tick will appear next to the username of a Self Verified user. This mark will be visible to all other users on the Koo platform.

2. Who can Self Verify themselves?

The Self Verification feature is available to Koo users who have a Koo account and an Indian phone number linked to a valid Aadhaar number issued by the UIDAI.

If you do not have an Indian phone number linked to  a Government-issued Aadhaar Number you will not be able to voluntarily self verify yourself.

3. What is the process of Self Verification on Koo?

The Self Verification process can be completed in a few easy steps via the Koo App or through web application. 

On Clicking, “Apply for Self Verification” you will be redirected to a secure page of a verification partner.

A list of government approved documents will be displayed, choose one, and then follow the on screen instructions.

On successful verification you will see  a visible marker will appear adjacent to the display name of the user on their Koo profile.

4. How do I know that a user has Self Verified their identity?

On successful completion of Self Verification, a tick will appear adjacent to the display name of the user on their Koo profile. 

5. What are the benefits of Self Verification? 

Self Verification gives users the following advantages: 

  • A Self Verified user is an authentic voice on the internet and other users can interact with such users with the knowledge and security that a Self Verified user is a responsible and authentic social media user.
  • More legitimacy to voice on the internet. Other users are likely to trust and interact with a user who has Self Verified themselves, rather than an unverified user. 
  • Reduces threat of impersonation. 

Example: If User A complains that User B is impersonating him/her, User A can simply voluntarily verify themselves on Koo. This will enable Koo to determine the legitimacy of the verified user’s claim and take down impersonating content. If necessary, this will also make it easier for law enforcement agencies to take speedy and appropriate action. 

6. How will Self Verification enhance safety?
  • Reduced threat of impersonation: Self Verification can be completed only using an Indian phone number linked to an Aadhaar number unique to an individual. Imposters will not be able to claim an identity and obtain a Self Verified tick.
  • Users voluntarily Self Verifying themselves send a strong signal that they are authentic persons and are unlikely to indulge in unwarranted behavior on the platform. 
  • If any harassment or unlawful activities were to occur by a verified user, legal remedies are more easily available as you can identify who you want to take action against. 
7.Disadvantages of not Self Verifying yourself. 

Self verification is not mandatory for expressing thoughts and opinions on the Koo App. Users are free to use the Koo App and express themselves freely, subject to their compliance with our Community Guidelines.

Self Verification has been introduced as per the requirements of Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines & Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. Self Verification lends credibility and authenticity to a profile and allows other users to place a higher level of trust on such users. 

8. What are the documents required to use the Self Verification feature?

Users can verify their identities using their 12-digit Aadhaar number linked to an Indian mobile number.  

9. What precautions should a user take while Self Verifying themselves?

This OTP generated by UIDAI is unique to each user. A Self Verified tick will be granted to a user when the OTP entered by the user is a successful match with the OTP sent by the UIDAI. Koo will receive this confirmation from our third party service provider. 

10. Will a Self Verified tick be provided if the phone number associated with a Koo account is different from the phone number connected to Aadhaar? 

A Self Verified Tick will be provided if there is a successful match between the OTP provided by the user and the OTP sent by UIDAI to the registered mobile number. This process is the same as used by KYC in other sectors.

11. Is Self Verification a legal requirement? 

Koo is a Significant Social Media Intermediary (SSMI) as defined under the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines & Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021

As per Rule 4(7) of these guidelines, SSMIs are required to enable a verification feature for users who wish to voluntarily verify themselves. Koo is the first SSMI to enable this feature.

Infact, Koo is the first open social platform in the world to introduce a uniquely empowering Self Verification feature which democratizes participation on the internet. 

Voluntary verification is not mandatory for expressing thoughts and opinions on the Koo App. 

12. Does Self Verification mean that my name and Aadhaar number will be displayed to everyone? 

As a legally compliant, neutral, transparent and trusted platform for expressing thoughts and opinions in local languages, Koo values authenticity in its users. 

Koo celebrates and encourages content creators who curate engaging, wholesome and interactive content, which can be consumed by users across languages. That is why, we believe that by Self Verifying themselves, users can help to curb the spread of unwarranted content proliferated under the veil of anonymity. 

This feature is a step towards enhancing greater transparency and authenticity on the platform, building user confidence and creating a cleaner online environment.

13. Does Self Verification mean that my name and Aadhaar number will be displayed to everyone? 

On successful completion of Self Verification, a tick will appear adjacent to the name of the user on their Koo profile. 

Koo will not display the name or Aadhaar number of a user unless the user chooses to do so. Only a visible tick will be shown. 

Koo will also not store any Aadhaar data for any user

14 .Is Koo storing the Aadhaar data of users?

Koo does not store any Aadhaar data related to the process of Self Verification. Koo only records whether an Aadhaar number submitted for verification was validated or rejected by UIDAI. 

Aadhaar Verification/validation services are provided by third party service providers who comply with legal requirements of UIDAI in relation to storage and management of data. This process is the same as used by any other entity for Aadhaar based verification.

The third party vendors work within the parameters prescribed by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to verify the documents submitted by users. 

15. Where can I find Koo’s Privacy Policy and Terms and Conditions for Self Verification?

16. What are the safeguards taken by Koo to avoid identity theft in its voluntary verification process?  

The Self Verification verification process requires a user to first enter their 12-digit Aadhaar number and then enter the OTP received on the phone number linked to their Aadhaar. 

Hence, unless the user shares the unique OTP sent to their mobile numbers, there are no chances of identity theft during the self verification process. 

Users are strongly advised to not share the OTP received on their mobile number with anyone.


17. Will users be charged for Self Verification? 

No. This process is entirely free of charge for our users.

18. How long does the Self Verification take? 

The entire process will take only a few minutes. 

19. Does a person who has self verified himself/herself get more traction on the platform?

Self verification is meant only to establish that a profile is authentic. No additional benefits are granted to self verified profiles. 

However, experience has shown that online users like to interact and engage with known, authentic voices, rather than with accounts that may appear fake. Thus, users who have Self Verified themselves and post engaging content may get greater trust from other users. 

20. In future, will’Koo make self verification mandatory for every user on their platform?

As per the IT guidelines, although platforms are required to enable this feature, users are not mandated to verify their accounts. 

21. What steps will Koo take against those who have not self verified themselves and indulge in hate speech and abuses on their platform?

Koo takes actions against all violations of its Content Moderation policies, irrespective of Self Verification Status. Please read this section for more information on how Koo moderates content

22. How is it different from the Eminence Tick available on Koo?

The Koo Eminence Tick is awarded to our qualifying users recognising their eminence or achievements in the Indian society, specifically across sports, entertainment, media, spirituality, literature, and politics. We grant the Eminence Tick based on a transparent evaluation criteria available at Koo App – Eminence. Eminent users are granted a yellow tick next to their names on their Koo profiles. 

The Self Verification tick is displayed on successful completion of the verification process and signifies that an account is authentic
